All previous versions of the reason for the shark attack on the Russian tourist may turn out to be incorrect. At least the technical report on the Hurghada shark incident, which was prepared by an Egyptian scientific committee made up of marine science experts from the Red Sea Reserves and the Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries in Hurghada, cited another reason why sharks are coming to the coast, and attack people. And this reason is banal – hunger. “The attack was carried out to obtain the necessary food due to overfishing and shortage of fish stocks in the Red Sea,” Egyptian media quoted.
“This attack can be considered one of the expected accidents that can happen in the Red Sea. The number of shark attacks on humans has increased recently as fish stocks in the Red Sea are suffering due to illegal and unregulated fishing activities,” the committee’s report stated. The research did not reveal other reasons for the shark’s aggression.
We will remind you that earlier other versions were put forward. Thus, the researchers stated that the risk of shark attacks will remain at least until August. The reason is biology. As explained by Dr. Mahmoud Abdel-Radi, a marine environment professor at the National Institute of Marine Sciences in the Red Sea, the type of shark that attacked the trust belongs to the infamous type of tiger shark that often attacks swimmers and divers. They live where the currents are quite warm, and even when the water warms up, sharks swim in shallow water. The main reason is to protect the cubs from being eaten by male sharks. At the same time, the dangerous season begins in May – when sharks are looking for a safe place and are aggressive – and lasts until August.
And the fishermen, in turn, believe that the sharks were “fed” by the ship owners, Ahmed al-Maghrabi, the head of the Damietta fishing syndicate in Egypt, said. He stated that merchant ship owners often secretly dump dead or sick livestock into the open sea. What “feeds” sharks? But more than that: according to him, it is quite possible that the reason for the shark’s aggression towards the person who attacked the Russian tourist is related to the dumping of Egyptian pilgrims who died during the Hajj during their transportation by sea to Saudi Arabia – as assures the Egyptian, unscrupulous carriers, in order to hide violations during such transfers, also dump them in the Red Sea.
