The TOP 15 worst attractions in the world that you should not visit were presented in their review by the luggage storage network Stasher. The list also includes places where tourists rush in droves – like the Avenue of Stars in Hollywood, which, by the way, took first place, as well as the Chinese Wall, the Taj Mahal, the Forbidden City in Beijing, and much more.
To help tourists “identify which attractions to avoid on their next vacation,” experts assessed several criteria including Google reviews, quality of local accommodation, distance from the nearest international airport, tourist safety, and popularity on TikTok.
Experts presented a list of 15 attractions that most disappointed tourists. It is worth noting that it includes those available to our tourists:
- Walk of Fame in Hollywood. There are over 2,700 plaques dedicated to some of the biggest names in cinema. But arriving tourists are not too happy. “It’s just a lot of dirty stars on the sidewalk,” tourists write. In addition, they are not satisfied with the situation around them: “The area is terrible: aggressive street vendors and others, half-dressed, with their trousers pulled down to their knees, shouting and swearing at passers-by. Famous stars are surrounded by mobile burger joints. Save your time and skip it.”
- The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul (Turkey) is one of the oldest covered markets in the world, during the Ottoman Empire operated as a market for jewelry and handmade precious fabrics, and is well known to Russian tourists. And, to put it mildly, not every lover of Istanbul wants to visit it a second time – and can subscribe to the words of tourists who “driven” this attraction to second place on the list of worst: “I was looking forward to seeing this place and was very disappointed. The selection is terrible, but the attitude of the sellers just annoyed me. I don’t think I’ll ever want to come back here again”; “Fakes and forgeries. Not a single price tag. The sellers are rude and aggressive,” tourists complain.
- The Taj Mahal mausoleum is considered one of the most beautiful buildings ever built – but tourists disagree. Even with the poignant love story that is usually told here – and the huge white marble mausoleum was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, whom he called Mumtaz Mahal or “The Chosen One of the Palace”. “It’s enough for you to look at the photographs; you won’t see anything special in person.” “Everything is made worse by annoying traders who will chase you like hyenas at every step,” said disappointed tourists.
- Busch Gardens Florida, which first opened in 1959, is a theme park with an entire landscape dedicated to Africa and Asia, located in Tampa Bay, Florida. He disappointed tourists. “The establishment is dirty and full of dissatisfaction on the part of the service staff,” they write. Let’s say right away that amusement parks are generally unlucky – there are quite a few of them in this rating.
- For example, next in line was Lotte World, a large entertainment complex in Seoul, South Korea, home to the world’s largest indoor theme park, as well as a shopping mall and an aquarium. Tourists are indignant at the huge number of visitors and unimaginable queues for attractions – this is a standard complaint about most parks.
- The city façade of Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong, often considered the birthplace of the city itself, is a vibrant area that never sleeps and that tourists feel obligated to show off. “Don’t get your hopes up, nothing is interesting here,” they write in disappointment.
- Ocean Park in Hong Kong, since 1977 has been declared “a must-see destination – for nature lovers and inquisitive minds, and thrill-seekers.” However, disappointed tourists make standard complaints about amusement parks.
- Fushimi Inari Shrine in Japan is considered the most important of several thousand shrines dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice. But neither the exotic beauty of the temple nor the local nature trails help tourists, who are disappointed by the huge number of visitors: “What is there to see – we were packed like sardines into a can!” – they are indignant.
- The Great Wall of China, surprisingly, a landmark whose total length is about 21,196 kilometers, also disappoints tourists with unimaginable crowds. The thing is that only a very small part of it is open to the public. “There were crowds of people pushing and shoving to buy tickets, and huge queues to get onto the wall itself,” tourists complain.
- Korea’s largest theme park, Everland, has also suffered from picky tourists. For whom the attractions are uninteresting and old, and the crowds of people are unbearable.
- Pier 39, located in San Francisco, is a waterfront complex surrounded by restaurants, shops, and independent attractions. Its main feature is the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and Alcatraz. Unfortunately, as tourists complain, “it’s gotten so dirty and smelly over the years”—and overall, they note, San Francisco is no longer a safe place to live, visit, or travel.
- PortAventura World, consisting of “six worlds in one place”, the first amusement park in Spain, also disappointed tourists. They claim that the park “smells like sewage,” and also criticize the queues and unfriendly staff.
- Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee.
- Magic Kingdom Park in Orlando, Florida, is one of the most visited amusement parks in the world, with more than 17 million visitors in 2022. The consequences are inevitable, the complaints are standard – queues, crowds, “there’s nowhere to even sit and eat.”
- Forbidden City, Beijing – the vast imperial palace complex also managed to disappoint tourists. “It was so boring inside this place,” they complain.
