According to Local Norway, Norway plans to introduce a tourist tax in 2024, but the authorities have not yet decided how exactly it should work.
It is expected that the tax will be collected from tourists for accommodation in hotels, and the purchase of souvenirs and services in the tourism sector.
The Lofoten Islands have said they are ready to become the first territory in the country to start the levy.
They want to decide because many popular tourist places are located in small towns, which have to spend a lot of money every year “on maintaining sights, hiking trails and cleaning up the garbage left by tourists.”
The innovation is opposed by the Norwegian Hospitality Association (NHO Reiseliv), which believes that the tourist tax will reduce the attractiveness of the country to tourists from abroad.
