The second largest city in the Czech Republic, Brno, was chosen as the Christmas capital of Europe for 2024 (among cities with a population of over 100,000 people).
The relevant decision of the international jury was published on the website The European Capital of Christmas.
“The city of Brno is a creative Christmas treasure through which the city itself conveys its touristic and Christmas appeal with important social and micro-macroeconomic consequences for the city structure,” the jury members noted.
Experts also reminded that the city delights tourists with many historical monuments, including those included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
At the same time, the Irish city of Waterford was named the best European Christmas city among settlements with a population of less than 100,000 people.
Jury members praised the city for Christmas aesthetics and harmony, achieved thanks to the arrangement of holiday fairs, highlighting and preservation of local intangible cultural traditions.
A special jury award went to the municipality of Almansa in Spain as the best tiny Christmas destination – home to only around 600 people.
