From mid-July, tourists wishing to start their journey through Egypt from the Great Pyramids of Giza will find it easier to arrive. According to local media, the new Egyptian Sphinx International Airport (SPX), located right next to the Pyramids of Giza, should start operating in mid-July 2022. At full capacity, the air force will start working closer to the high season.
Sphinx International Airport will serve both domestic and international flights, offering tourists a considerable advantage: it is located just a short drive from the Pyramids and the Great Egyptian Museum, much closer than Cairo International Airport. There are also domestic flights from the airport, in particular to the resorts of the Red Sea.
According to Mohammed Manar, the Minister of Civil Aviation, during the Cabinet meeting, the airport is currently 90% completed and will start operating according to Egypt’s summer schedule.
Manar added that the new airport will also provide one-day travel programs. Note that the first attempt to open the airport took place in 2018, since then the total area of the Sphinx International Airport has increased to 24 thousand square meters. It is estimated that it can accommodate up to 900 passengers per hour.
