The work of the airport of Catania (Sicily island) is suspended until Wednesday, July 19, due to a fire that occurred there last night.
The fire originated on the lower floor, the flames quickly spread to the terminal. All people were quickly evacuated from the building and, fortunately, no one was hurt. By morning the fire was extinguished. The causes of the fire are being investigated. Italy is currently experiencing a heatwave with temperatures reaching 48 degrees this week.
All flights are redirected to other airports in Sicily – to Palermo and Comiso. Palermo Airport is 4 hours from Catania Airport and Comiso is 2 hours away.
