A dead man rides 900 km undetected in train toilet in India

Indian police have found the body of a man who had driven 900 km undetected in northern India, locked in a train toilet.

They believe the man boarded the train a few days before it left Bihar and died in the toilet after he locked the door.

Railway police officer Ram Sahai said they opened the door on Sunday after passengers complained about the smell.

At that time, the Saharsa-Amritsar Jan Sewa Express train traveled almost 24 hours from its starting point. The whole journey takes 35 hours.

Indian media reported that the train was delayed by almost five hours as officials tried to identify the deceased before resuming the journey to Amritsar.

“We still don’t know anything about this man,” said Sahai, who is based in Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, where the gruesome discovery was made.

“He probably boarded the train while it was still at the station and died alone two or three days before his body was found,” he said.

Sanjay Rai, a railway hospital doctor, told The Times of India that the man “died, possibly in a coma.”

Authorities have distributed posters of the missing man at railway stations in Bihar.

Every year in India, tens of thousands of corpses remain unclaimed and unidentified. They are usually cremated by the police three days after efforts have been made to identify all relatives or relatives of the deceased.
