Switzerland experienced one of the heaviest downpours in the history of observations, the storm caused floods and chaos today in its financial capital Zurich.
According to SRF, more than 4 cm of rain fell on Zurich during the night, and more than 3.1 cm of rain fell on Waldegg, not far from the city, in 10 minutes.
This is compared to a record 4.11 cm that fell in 10 minutes on Lausanne during a storm in August 2018, the report said.
Zurich’s bus and tram sections were shut down because lines blocked trees and some streets were flooded. City officials did not provide details of any injuries or deaths.
“I went for a walk early in the morning, and the rain just didn’t stop. Huge trees fell at night, it was really scary, “Zurich resident Jessica Adams told Reuters.
The southern canton of Wallis has warned people to stay away from rivers as water levels rise.
The SRF meteorological service said further rains were forecast and that floods were likely to intensify, especially around lakes and rivers. Also warned about landslides.
