Accidents on airport runways involving aircraft and ground vehicles are quite rare, but they do happen. Another incident occurred with employees at the airport of Alicante (Spain) after a Renault Clio crashed into a Boeing 737.
An employee of Groundforce, a company specializing in cargo handling at Spanish airports, arrived to participate in the preparation of a Rayanair aircraft that was scheduled to fly to Manchester (UK). The officer stopped nearby and left the car in neutral without pulling the handbrake. Shortly thereafter, the hatchback crashed into the plane.
The incident caused a stir among airport employees. There were no people on board at the time of the accident, and the damage to the aircraft was minor. However, the plane went through a thorough inspection and the flight was delayed by 90 minutes. However, the airport management commented that the incident did not affect flights.
The previous similar incident occurred in September last year, when a VW Touareg crashed into a MiG-29 fighter at the airport in Kyiv (Ukraine).
