Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, who was re-elected in yesterday’s election, and wished him a successful second term, France Press reports.
“I sincerely wish you success in your public activities, as well as good health,” Putin said in a telegram to Macron, quoted by the Kremlin.
Yesterday, the French president was re-elected in the second round of the presidential election, defeating the far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.
In the past, she said she wanted to develop relations between Paris and Moscow, and in 2017 her party took a loan of 9 million euros from a Russian bank, recalls AFP.
Relations between France and Russia have seriously deteriorated since the beginning of Moscow’s military offensive in Ukraine.
However, despite the crisis, Macron repeatedly spoke with Putin both before and after the conflict, but was unable to find a solution.
The African Union also congratulated Macron on his re-election.
AU Commission Chairman Mussa Faki Mahamat called on Twitter to continue building “renewed and mutually beneficial” relations between France and Africa.
