Tourists, expats and “relocants” who rent housing in Turkey can relax for a while – the law in Turkey, which was awaited with horror by tenants and with triumph by apartment owners, has been repealed. More precisely, it is about the “repeal of the repeal” of the law that allowed landlords to raise the rent, local experts from Antalya explained at the forums. However, this appears to be a “pre-election” maneuver that will only exacerbate the problem in the long run.
The point is that the provision limiting rent increases to 25%, which was supposed to expire on July 1, will be extended. According to the bloggers, this was announced by the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Murat Kurum.
These restrictions clearly do not correspond to reality: according to the VITAM Center for Economic and Social Research, the annual growth rate of the average cost of a square meter of rental housing in Turkey in February was 189.5%. Why, at all rates of inflation in Turkey, are such restrictive requirements imposed on homeowners?
Pre-election maneuver – confident bloggers. “Most of Turkey lives on rent. Therefore, the main electorate is the tenants, not the landlords. It is for their benefit that all disputes are resolved and laws are passed. On the eve of the elections, appeasing the electorate is particularly important,” they said.
However, tenants should not relax: it seems that “it is practically impossible to evict him from the apartment, only after dancing with tambourines”, bloggers write, however, the owners have no intention of “engaging in charity”. Therefore, they often have no other options, “except to evict and evict people anyway, finding loopholes in the law and settling new ones, already at the corresponding price of inflation.” In their opinion, the “populist” measure will not last long. “Experts say that even if a prison term is given for increasing the rent price by more than 25%, this problem will not be solved in this way and clashes between apartment owners and their tenants will increase,” experts from Antalya add.
