Energy Minister of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko made a proposal to European countries to use underground gas storage facilities in Ukraine. The tanks have a capacity of 31 billion cubic meters and are the largest underground gas storage facilities in Europe.
Head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko wrote on the social network that Europe is taking decisive steps to abandon Russian gas. “European countries will work to create a platform for joint gas purchases. The initiative is also open to Ukraine,” he added, referring to the decisions taken by the Council of Europe.
Ukrainian proposal
German Galushchenko pointed out that Europe sees the need to abandon the energy resources of the aggressor state and plans to strengthen cooperation in order to ensure the energy security of the continent, create solidarity mechanisms and compensate for energy purchases so as not to depend on raw material supplies from Russia. “We are pleased with this decision. Russian gas is a weapon, as Ukraine has repeatedly emphasized. Today, these weapons are killing innocent Ukrainian children,” the minister added.
He stressed that his country has large natural gas storage capacities, and Ukrainian underground reservoirs are the largest in Europe. “In our Regional Energy Partnership initiative, we propose to use our underground storage facilities to create strategic gas supplies to European countries,” the head of the ministry wrote.
“Despite Russia’s full-scale military aggression, Ukraine remains a powerful and reliable partner of Europe in terms of energy security,” the Minister of Energy of Ukraine assured.
