French authorities have found an unusual solution for the accommodation of Ukrainian refugees in Marseilles: the moored old tourist ferry was decided to convert into a floating hotel for refugees, which can accommodate up to 1,600 people, according to French media. Thus, the ship became the largest reception center for Ukrainian citizens in France.
One of the largest vessels of the Corsica Linea, the Méditerranée usually transported tourists between countries such as France, Algeria and Tunisia, the Balearic Sea, which borders the Mediterranean. The ship is capable of speeds of up to 44 km/h, delivering more than 2,450 tourists and 700 cars at each crossing.
During the coronavirus pandemic, about two years ago, the ship returned to port and will now become a temporary home for Ukrainian refugees. Refugees are expected to be housed in renovated cabins. The liner will return to the sea no earlier than June.
“We have a moral requirement to welcome and show hospitality. This floating hotel will be at their disposal, as well as social assistance, health care, education, children’s education, childcare and crèche. Since the start of Russia’s war with Ukraine, more than 3.9 million people have been forced to flee Ukraine, “said Christophe Mirmann, a spokesman for the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
The French authorities grant temporary residence permits to refugees in the European Union, which allows them access to education and employment in the country.
