Finland and Sweden appear ready to join NATO this summer, according to the British newspaper The Times, citing officials.
U.S. sources say the alliance’s membership in both Scandinavian countries was “a topic for discussion and numerous meetings” during talks between NATO foreign ministers last week.
It was also attended by representatives of both countries, the report said.
Washington hopes to increase NATO membership from 30 to 32 as a direct result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Finland is expected to run in June, followed by Sweden.
Officials say Stockholm and Helsinki’s willingness to join the Western defense alliance is proof that Russia has made a “huge strategic mistake”.
