According to NBC News, two different variants of monkeypox have been found in the United States. This makes it difficult for specialists to determine the source of infection.
In total, 900 cases of infection with the virus have been identified outside of Africa, where it is common. This is significantly more than the last detection of the virus in the Western Hemisphere.
In 2003, only about 50 infections were registered. American experts specified that in two cases in the country, the virus is genetically different from the other 20.
However, experts continue to assess the risk of a massive spread of the disease as low.
