Tourists warned of threat of anthrax outbreak in Thailand

The Thai authorities have issued a warning about a possible outbreak of a deadly disease – anthrax, which could “migrate” to the kingdom from neighboring Laos.

At least three cases of infection of residents have already been recorded there, and the infection occurred due to their consumption of meat from a suddenly deceased cow.

The Thai province closest to Laos is Buriram, and the authorities of this region were the first to sound the alarm. The provincial livestock department issued an emergency message urging residents to exercise extreme caution.

“The disease, which can be transmitted from animals to humans, especially through consumption of raw cattle and buffalo meat, has required increased surveillance and precautionary measures,” the department said in a statement.

Veterinary control has already been strengthened on the Thai-Laotian border, but the main thing is that people observe at least the basic rules of self-preservation. First of all, Thai authorities urge residents and tourists to refrain from eating raw meat and dishes based on it.

The authorities are calling for the abandonment of larb, a popular salad made from minced meat with onions and herbs, not only in Buriram but throughout Thailand. But this is not the only Thai dish based on uncooked pork and beef. Also in tourist areas, local chefs offer blood-based soups Lu Muu, Kuay Thieo Rua (“boat noodles”), as well as lyat and laab salads with raw meat.
