Puerto Rico has declared a state of emergency due to an increase in dengue fever cases.
Since the beginning of the year, 549 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in the country, most of them in the capital San Juan. More than 340 people are hospitalized. This was reported by the local Ministry of Health.
Last year, Puerto Rico, which has a population of about 3.2 million, reported 1,293 cases of dengue fever.
The World Health Organization’s (WHO) tropical diseases unit said in February that more than 5.5 million cases of dengue fever were reported worldwide in 2023, including 5,000 deaths.
