The Swiss concern Nestle SA is withdrawing from sale more than 45 types of ice cream due to possible contamination with carcinogenic ethylene oxide, said the Spanish non-governmental organization for consumer protection FACUA.
Froneri, the world’s largest ice cream maker, has announced the withdrawal of a number of types in connection with new European Commission directives. The company said that it is a small amount of contamination by components that in practice do not pose a threat to consumer health.
Neither Nestle nor Froneri have published a complete list of products affected by the contamination. FACUA representatives received a list of ice cream withdrawn from sale by Spanish retailers. According to them, 46 types of ice cream with the Nestle brand, produced at Froneri factories, including Nestlé, Milka, Toblerone, Nuii, Oreo, Princesa and others, were violated.
The resume is published on the organization’s website.
FACUA warns that the list is limited to data from three retailers, and urges Nestle and Froneri to publish complete information on ice cream contaminated with ethylene oxide, which regulators consider a carcinogen. The organization made a similar appeal to the Spanish Food Safety Agency (AESAN). / RIA Novosti
