The death toll from tropical cyclone Bacirai in Madagascar has risen to 111, most of them in the area where the disaster razed houses to the ground.
The National Disaster Management Agency said 87 people have died in the Ikongo region off the east coast of the Indian Ocean island.
The agency said in an updated fact sheet that around 30,000 people are living in shelters following Batsirai’s attack over the weekend.
Aid agencies are concerned about providing the population with clean drinking water and have started building purification systems. Waterborne diseases are a major health hazard following tropical storms.
Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world. About 42% of children suffer from chronic malnutrition even without a natural disaster.
