The regional government of the Italian region of Sicily is imposing a state of emergency and crisis for the next six months due to forest fires raging on the island since the end of last month, according to DPA.
District Mayor Nelo Musumechi said on Facebook that unusually high temperatures and abnormal weather conditions would pose a threat in the coming weeks.
At the same time, in Sardinia, the fire service of the province of Oristano reported that a fire broke out in a tourist house. Firefighters did not allow the flames to reach the nearest vegetation, and no casualties were reported.
Oristano, located on the west coast of the Mediterranean island, recently faced large forest fires that caused significant damage, reminds the DPA. Unusually high temperatures above 40 degrees caused a drought in southern Italy, which contributed to the spread of fires.
It is believed that many of them were caused intentionally.
Just yesterday, Italian firefighters intervened in 800 settlements, including 188 in Sicily, 120 in Calabria and 106 in the southeastern region of Puglia.
