Authorities have begun closing hotels in Turkish resorts: they have become dangerous for tourists

On Turkey’s trending resort zones—particularly Muğla province—authorities have launched a sweeping safety crackdown on hotels. Following inspections, five properties were ordered shut due to violations including counterfeit alcohol, unlicensed loud music, and failure to meet guest safety standards.

The regional governor reported that in September, inspection teams evaluated over a hundred hospitality facilities. They found cases of unauthorized music, use of sidewalks for unlicensed vendors, and lack of proper emergency equipment in rooms.

Coastal checks extended to yachts and boats: several vessels failed to meet safety standards, potentially endangering sea excursions.

This move serves a dual purpose: raising safety standards and cleaning the tourism sector, but also risking backlash from tourists and strain on smaller operators.

What tourists should watch out for

  • Before booking, verify if the hotel holds safety certifications and operating licenses;

  • Avoid cheap alcohol offerings from unverified sources;

  • Steer clear of late-night parties or loud music not coordinated with management;

  • Stay in contact with your embassy or consulate in case of emergencies;

  • Get travel insurance covering health incidents and unauthorized events in resort zones.
