“Keep suitcases away from the bed, preferably in the bathroom,” said Missy Henriksen, former vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Control Association, for terrified tourists. Otherwise, she warned, tourists may return home with more than just a tan. Namely – with bed bugs.
The expert warned tourists that bed bugs can be found in all types of hotels, from budget to five-star hotels. And there is only one simple way to protect yourself from uninvited guests – at least in your luggage. “Bed bugs are least likely to crawl into luggage stored in the bathroom. They don’t like tiled floors and smooth surfaces,” the expert assured.
But the carpet next to the bed is an extremely risky place in this sense: if suddenly there are bedbugs in the room, there is a risk of catching them with you in your suitcase, the expert assures. “They like to be closer to where people can sleep,” Ms. Hendricksen said.
She gives similar advice to tourists who fear that they have already brought unwanted six-legged guests from vacation: open a suitcase at home on a hard floor, ideally in a tiled bathroom. And carefully inspect the seams, folds and pockets of the suitcase. And also wash all the clothes that were in it.
It will be recalled that a British tourist recently completed a court case regarding bedbugs, which led her to a state of stress and hospitalization while on vacation in Hurghada. Read the details in the article “It was a nightmare: in Hurghada, a tourist was bitten and then not allowed to go to the pool.”
