According to the ZDF TV channel, on December 31, the German Post received the previous telegram in its history.
The company said that Deutsche Post would stop sending telegrams on December 31, 2022, due to a drop in public demand for this method of transmitting the information. Telegrams have become quite expensive – a medium-sized telegram with a volume of 160 characters costs about 13 euros.
Another reason for the refusal is a relatively long, by modern standards, way to the addressee. Usually, a telegram is delivered within a day, while a letter sent by e-mail or a message in a messenger arrives at the addressee instantly.
It is believed that the history of telegrams began in 1844 when the American Samuel Morse sent the world’s first dispatch by telegraph. Its text read: “Wonderful are your works, Lord.”
