A magnitude 6.8 earthquake shook eastern Caledonia, according to Agence France-Presse, citing the US Seismological Institute. The shock occurred at 16.44 local time (05.44 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers, 279 kilometers southeast of Tadin in New Caledonia.
The U.S. Weather Service has issued a warning about the risk of dangerous tsunamis on coasts within a radius of 300 km from the epicenter of the earthquake, especially off the coast of Vanuatu.
“Residents of endangered areas should be careful, follow the information and follow the instructions of national and local authorities,” – warned the US Meteorological Service.
The magnitude of the earthquake was initially reported to be 7.2, after which it was adjusted.
