Europe can expect a “huge risk of terrorist attacks” in the coming days as the war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas continues, the European Union’s home affairs commissioner has warned.
According to RFI, EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson specifically warned that similar attacks could happen during the Christmas holidays, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“With the war between Israel and Hamas and the polarization it is causing in our society, as well as the approaching holiday season, there is a huge risk of terrorist attacks in the European Union,” she said.
In her statement, the EU commissioner did not provide any details about any information that might have prompted her warning.
Johansson, whose remit includes security and immigration, said the European Commission would allocate an additional 30 million euros to ensure security in vulnerable areas across the bloc, particularly in places where important religious sites are located.
