A sunken ship of the 18th century was found in Egypt

An archeological mission at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Alexandria, under the supervision of the High Council of Antiquities, discovered the front of a shipwreck on Saadana Island in the Red Sea. It was a merchant ship dating from the mid-18th century AD. is.

Ihab Fahmi, head of the Central Office of Sunken Antiquities at the High Council of Antiquities, said the university mission had also found the middle part of the ship. This was in addition to the hundreds of other finds and artifacts that were part of the ship’s cargo.

He added that parts of the ship were found during excavations in 1994 by an expedition of the US Marine Archaeological Center.

The Archaeological Mission of the University of Alexandria resumed work at this site in 2017 to identify and document the rest of the ship’s hull using photogrammetric technology.

This would help the mission create an accurate three-dimensional 3D model of the ship by studying its design and the technology of building and preserving the artifacts that were discovered.

Fahmi said the mission’s research showed that the open ship contained a variety of cargo, including porcelain, earthenware of various shapes and sizes, in addition to various types of grain.

He added that research has shown that the shipwreck was probably caused by his collision with huge steep coral reefs while traveling from Southeast Asia to Egypt.
