The punishment came 16 years after the crime – it was after this period that charges were brought against the rapist who raped a tourist back in 2007, Avianews. kz reports concerning Turprom.
It all happened in 2007 in the Australian city of Cairns, on its main attraction – the Cairns embankment or esplanade. The then 19-year-old woman was walking along the Esplanade at around 3.20 am on March 17 when a man approached her and tried to grab her. The woman struggled and resisted, and she almost managed to escape, but in the end, she fell and the criminal got his way.
The victim was taken to the hospital with a jaw injury and in shock. An investigation began, but the case was ultimately closed with no suspects, “despite an extensive investigation.”
And so the case was resumed. The suspect, a 51-year-old man who was 35 at the time, was arrested on Friday at a property west of Bundaberg. A sample of his DNA was compared to a sample taken from the scene, police said. He has been charged with rape and is due to appear in the Magistrates’ Court on January 10.
