A video with millions of dead fish that filled the second-largest river in Australia, was published by CNN.
According to media reports, the cause of the mass death of fish in the Darling River has not been officially announced, but there are versions of the tragedy.
An incident with a sharp and sudden warming took place in the western part of the state of New South Wales, about 1000 kilometers from Sydney.
“Authorities are also linking the natural disaster to flood waters receding,” writes CNN.
The fish may have died due to low oxygen levels in the water, also known as hypoxia, according to the Australian State Department of Commodity Industries.
The Fisheries Department of the country’s most populous state said in a statement that the destructive process has not yet stopped.
“This event is still ongoing as the western New South Wales heatwave continues to put additional strain on the system, which is facing extreme conditions,” the agency explained.
Experts say that a similar phenomenon occurred in 2019: due to poor water quality and sudden temperature changes, more than a million fish died 4 years ago.
