Egypt to Raise Entry Visa Fees: What It Means for Tourists

Парламент Єгипту схвалив законопроєкт, який передбачає підвищення тарифів на консульські послуги. Туристична галузь побоюється зниження потоку мандрівників.

In early November, Egypt’s parliament approved a proposal from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to raise tariffs on services provided by the ministry both domestically and abroad. The new law introduces a fee of up to $20 USD for each entry or transit visa issued at border checkpoints or through Egyptian embassies and consulates worldwide.

This means that the cost of a standard tourist visa, currently $25 USD, may rise to $45 USD. Authorities say the additional revenue will be used to fund the development and modernization of Egyptian diplomatic buildings abroad.

However, representatives of Egypt’s tourism industry have voiced concerns that the price hike could reduce the number of foreign visitors and harm the country’s competitiveness.

In a statement addressed to Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Tourism Sherif Fathi, the Egyptian Federation of Tourist Chambers said the increase may have negative effects on inbound tourism.

Federation chairman Hossam El Shaer noted that the timing was unfortunate, coinciding with the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum and renewed global interest in Egypt.

Despite these concerns, analysts believe the country will remain one of the most popular destinations for travelers, thanks to affordable resort prices, convenient flight connections, and straightforward visa procedures.

Practical Visa Tips for Foreign Travelers Visiting Egypt

1. Visa on Arrival
Most travelers, including Ukrainians and citizens of the EU, UK, and US, can obtain a visa on arrival at international airports such as Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, or Marsa Alam. The fee must be paid in US dollars (cash only), and the process typically takes just a few minutes.

2. Apply Online (e-Visa)
Visitors can also apply for an electronic visa via the official Egyptian government website: visa2egypt.gov.eg. After filling out the online form and paying the fee (around $25–45 USD, depending on the visa type), approval is usually sent via email within 3–5 business days.

3. Validity and Exemptions
A single-entry tourist visa is valid for 30 days. Travelers heading to Sharm El Sheikh for up to 15 days do not need a visa.

4. Avoid Scams
Use only the official government website to apply for your visa. Avoid third-party websites claiming to “expedite” the process or charge additional service fees. Payments should always be processed directly through the official platform.

5. Required Documents
Travelers should have a passport valid for at least six months after their return date, round-trip flight tickets, and proof of accommodation.

6. Extra Tip
Do not buy “visa stickers” or pay fees to unofficial agents inside the airport — this is one of the most common tourist scams.

Experts recommend applying in advance to avoid airport queues and potential fee increases once the new regulation takes effect.

With its year-round sunshine, historic landmarks, and welcoming resorts, Egypt remains one of the most accessible and rewarding destinations for international travelers — as long as you plan smart and stay cautious.
