The vote to exclude Russia from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is scheduled for Wednesday. In order for Russia to be excluded from membership in a tourism organization, 160 member states must support a two-thirds majority. Most likely, the result of a proper democratic vote is already known. UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Polikashvili, however, acknowledged that in any case, the suspension of Russia’s participation will be temporary and will have “symbolic consequences.”
In his statement, Mr Polikashvili unequivocally stated that he “hopes that the member states will vote in favor of terminating Russia’s membership”. “Any moderation is motivated by fear,” he said. He also called on all member states to “show solidarity”.
“If Russia’s membership is terminated, Russia will temporarily lose its participation in this organization, which provides technical support for tourism development. This is seen as an event that could have symbolic consequences for Russia,” the UNWTO added.
