The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal acquitted a man accused of changing passwords to his wife’s Instagram and Microsoft social media accounts (email).
Earlier, the court of first instance fined the defendant 100 thousand dirhams (US $ 27.3 thousand) on these charges, but he appealed the sentence. According to the lawyer of the accused, Ali Al Mansoori, the plaintiff’s side was unable to prove that the man changed passwords deliberately in order to prevent his wife from using accounts, since they were originally entered in his name.
Also, according to the lawyer, there was no technical data in the case file indicating that the husband gained access to his wife’s personal pages. The court found that the man had no criminal intentions. Among other things, the plaintiff was unable to prove that her husband used her accounts without her permission or prevented her from accessing Instagram and Microsoft. The verdict of the first instance court was overturned, and the defendant was fully acquitted.
Earlier in the UAE, a husband sued his wife to force her to pay off a loan for a car he gave her for her birthday.
As noted in the case file, the man bought a car for his wife at her request and issued it in her name, but later she refused to pay the balance of the loan in the amount of 108 thousand dirhams (US $ 29.5 thousand) for it. The amount must be paid by March 2023.
In addition, the plaintiff demanded that his wife pay him compensation in the amount of 20 thousand dirhams for material and moral damage suffered by him as a result of her refusal to pay the specified amount, as 12% of the total amount for the right to own a vehicle. As a result, the court dismissed the claim and ordered the plaintiff to pay legal costs.
