After the universal flood, the United Arab Emirates suffered another misfortune. Dubai and other emirates have been attacked by mosquitoes, and there is a risk that they are infected with viruses dangerous to humans. At the very least, timeoutdubai experts have warned locals and tourists that mosquitoes “at worst” can lead to the spread of diseases and viruses, including dengue fever, malaria, and the Zika virus. The publication also reported that authorities are “intensifying their efforts to control mosquito populations” in popular tourist destinations across the country.
According to the publication, after the floods in the UAE, a “rapid increase” in the mosquito population was recorded. Their breeding mosquitoes can be found in water bodies and damp places and this becomes a serious problem after periods of flooding.
“The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has announced that it is in the third phase of its mosquito control campaign. Relevant authorities in each emirate will work closely with the ministry to minimize the problem by implementing thermal fogging to kill insects and their larvae, as well as pumping water out of flooded areas,” tourists were promised.
In the meantime, the Dubai Municipality has given tourists and residents of the emirate tips on how to prevent mosquito bites:
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing with long sleeves and pants.
- Apply insect repellents containing diet or picaridin to exposed skin and reapply as directed.
- Remove stagnant water from fountains, swimming pools, old tires, barrels, and empty containers.
- Install suitable window and door screens and make sure they are intact to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside.
