Turkey Reaches 136 Eco-Tourism Zones: Where Should Travelers Go?

Туреччина розширює мережу екотуризму та планує довести кількість маршрутів до 200 до 2028 року.

Turkey is rapidly developing eco-tourism, generating major income for rural regions and the national economy. As of November, the number of officially designated eco-tourism zones has reached 136, bringing in approximately 2 billion lira annually.

How Turkey is expanding eco-tourism

Eco-tourism is defined as sustainable travel that protects natural resources and supports local communities. Under the 2021–2025 Eco-Tourism Action Plan, natural and cultural sites are being integrated into travel infrastructure, with special support provided to residents of forest villages to help them start local businesses.

The leader in the number of eco-zones is Artvin, home to eight designated areas. By the end of the 12th Development Plan (2024–2028), Turkey aims to increase the number of eco-tourism zones to 200.

Forest parks: growing popularity

Forest parks play a key role in eco-tourism growth. Their number has skyrocketed from 92 in 2002 to 1954 in 2024. 348 offer accommodation, while 1606 provide day-use facilities.

In total, forest parks generate 12 billion lira annually and attract around 45 million visitors each year.

Mobile app for travelers

The Forestry Directorate has launched a mobile app, “My Forest”, offering maps, trail information, weather updates and activity guides.
