Egypt’s capital, Cairo, plans to implement the Nexgen Sustainable City project, which will be the world’s first climate-friendly city that produces more energy and food than it consumes. The city is being designed to ensure food, energy and water security, as well as to develop a green economy.
A separate city will be located in the eastern part of Cairo. Its estimated area is 580 hectares, which will provide 9,000 housing units for a population of 35,000 inhabitants. The project will create 10,000 jobs, most of which will be in green technology industries such as food, energy, water and waste technology, creating a circular green economy for the city.
For example, solar-powered atmospheric water generators will produce clean drinking water from the air. There will be no cars in the city, the roads will be equipped with special running, cycling and horse paths. It is planned that the city will develop ecotourism, medical tourism, retail, educational and entertainment facilities. Future hotel facilities include a five-star eco-resort, glamping lodges, an ecotourism center, and a nature reserve conservation center. Medical facilities include an autistic village, a rehabilitation and wellness center, and clinics.
The project was developed by URB, which has already been working on the idea of developing sustainable cities in Oman, Yas Island (an artificial island in Abu Dhabi) and Dubai.
