UAH 1,000,000 fine for damaging artifacts: Egypt tightens rules

Law No. 117 of 1983 on the protection of antiquities provides for several penalties for the preservation of archaeological sites and any collectibles of historical and archaeological value – especially against erroneous acts committed by some visitors to archaeological areas.

The main penalties are as follows:

1. Imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years and a fine of at least 500,000 lei for anyone who intentionally destroys an ancient object.

2. Imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years and a fine of at least 500,000 lei for anyone who willfully destroys movable or immovable antiques.

3. Writing phrases on antiquities in order to distort them entails the above-mentioned punishment.

4. Severe imprisonment and a fine of at least LE500,000 for an excavation offense if the defendant is an employee of the Ministry of Antiquities.
