Sharks have reappeared in Egypt, attacking tourists. Over the past few days, two women have died from the jaws of predators in Sahl Hasheesh (near Hurghada). A tourist living in Egypt spoke about the likely causes of the attacks at the resort.
Who are the dead?
Two women died after the attack of marine predators at different times, but the places of these two incidents are very close: according to various sources, they are separated by only 200-300 meters. The first victim is a 68-year-old Australian tourist who lived at the resort permanently, and the second is a 44-year-old Romanian traveler who came to the hotel on a package tour. If in the second case no one saw the moment of the attack and the woman was not discovered immediately, but only after some time, then in the first case, the incident was recorded by cameras.
“It is amazing that she was still alive and did not even scream (people crowded on the pier yelled). The woman died in the ambulance. Separately, they note the complete inaction of the lifeguards on the beach (or rather, their complete absence),” the tourist says in this regard.
An investigation is currently underway into where the sharks came from at the resorts. Doubt in the natural appearance of predators off the coast of Hurghada appeared not by chance: earlier they were sometimes seen in Sharm el-Sheikh, but not in Hurghada. Although by the standards of a shark, 55 kilometers across the Red Sea will not be difficult to overcome.
The probable causes of shark attacks near the resort, according to the author, are as follows:
Firstly, according to the tourist, the feeding of small fish by tourists provoked the predator. “Many vacationers drag rolls from the hotel to feed the fish with them. This is harmful and generally prohibited because it violates the ecosystem of the Red Sea (the fish there have enough of their fish food, they need rolls for them). But who is stopped by bans? The logic is that they fed small fish – a large one (shark) swam on them, tourists fell under the distribution … ”, she explained.
However, this version seemed very doubtful to the tourist, because. tourists from almost all hotels constantly feed the fish, but shark attacks happen only once every few years.
Secondly, predators were attracted by a sunken ship with sheep. “Near the coast of Sudan, a ship with carcasses of sheep turned out to be underwater. Poor sheep (about 15 thousand pieces) were taken to the upcoming Eid al-Adha in KSA, but something was not calculated. There seemed to be too many sheep, and the ship tilted and sank. The sharks smelled and tasted blood, then it’s clear…”, – said the tourist. However, there are inconsistencies here as well. The ship sank three weeks ago and the distance from the place of the incident to Hurghada is more than 1 km.
Thirdly, they warned about the danger in advance. The tourist noted that the likelihood of an attack was reported back in early May. However, the warning was addressed primarily to vacationers in Sharm el-Sheikh. Although in a straight line from one resort to another sharks swim not far. “One way or another, then Ras Mohammed was closed because animal carcasses were in the water. Then they said that sharks might appear, and not necessarily immediately, but within the next 2-3 months, ”added the tourist.
Fourthly, the attack of sharks is nothing but sabotage. “Egypt is someone (let’s not point a finger) across the throat. And sharks can theoretically be fed with meat first, and then stop so that they swim away to get “meat” on their own. It sounds crazy, but they also give such a version … ”, the tourist wrote.
However, these are only versions. The reason may be something else.
Is it possible to swim in Hurghada now?
A ban on access to the water has been introduced for vacationers from hotels that are near the scene. In other hotels, tourists were only warned of the danger and were not forbidden to swim in the Red Sea. “And our man is not so easy to get through, so people, although frightened, splash in the water. For “for what” paid “should be swallowed,” the tourist remarked philosophically.
