Tourism boom in Greece

In Greece, there is a surge in the number of tourists, and in connection with this, the authorities expect the economy to grow.

According to central bank governor Yannis Sturnaras, the Greek economy could grow more than expected as more tourists enter the country. This is because most Europeans have chosen Greece for their summer holidays.

“A 3.2 percent expansion is our base case at the Bank of Greece, but this is based on the assumption that travel revenue, which we call tourism, will be 80 percent of 2019 levels. It looks like it will be close to 100 percent.” So 3.2 percent is probably at the bottom of the probability distribution,” said Giannis Sturnaras.

The tourism sector is vital to Greece, as the industry accounts for about a fifth of the country’s economy and over a quarter of jobs.

Recall that back in April, Greece decided to soften the anti-COVID restrictions for tourists. From May 1 to August 31, when visiting catering establishments and shops, tourists and residents do not need to present a vaccination passport or a certificate of past COVID-19 disease.
