Winter may tempt you to stay indoors with a warm drink, but it also opens the door to discovering Europe’s iconic cities in a calmer, more magical way. A short winter escape can help you unwind after the holiday rush — and show familiar destinations from зовсім another angle.
According to Time Out, the top winter getaway for 2025/2026 is surprisingly Athens. Although the Greek capital is typically seen as a summer destination, its scorching 40°C heat makes sightseeing difficult during peak months. In winter, however, Athens transforms into a comfortable, lively and incredibly atmospheric city.
Time Out writer John Ovans was so impressed that he spent an entire winter season in the city. He says Athens “never goes into hibernation,” offering cultural events, nightlife and outdoor activities from September to March.
Ovans believes Athens could soon outperform Lisbon as Europe’s leading digital nomad hub, thanks to affordable living, friendly locals and a uniquely warm urban vibe. And winter weather is a major bonus: on sunny days, temperatures can reach 22–25°C, making it perfect for exploring.
Second on Time Out’s list is Venice, a city notoriously crowded in summer. But in January and February, its streets and canals are peaceful, allowing visitors to admire the city’s beauty without the rush.
Third place goes to Madrid, recommended for travelers who want to enjoy festive traditions with a local twist — but without the crowds queuing for hot chocolate in the city center.
