In April this year, Spain received almost 10 times more tourists than in the same month of 2021 – 6.1 million against 629,000. Such data was published by the Spanish Statistical Office (INE).
In comparison, 7.14 million international travelers arrived in the country in April 2019.
Experts note that travel-related spending by tourists is recovering even faster. These 6.1 million tourists spent €6.9 million during their stay, nearly matching the 2019 level of €7.056 million spent in April 2019.
Most of the Spanish tourist flow today are tourists from the UK – 1.2 million people, or 20.4% of the total.
In total, 15,777,565 people spent their holidays in Spain in the first four months of 2021. The main destinations were the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Balearic Islands. In 2019, a record 83.9 million tourists visited Spain. With the high season yet to come, a near-complete recovery can be predicted for the industry, which typically accounts for around 11 percent of Spain’s gross domestic product.
