Up to 15 years in prison and a fine of 300,000 Thai baht threatens even tourists for “deliberate use” of counterfeit banknotes in Thailand. The problems were reported at the highest level: the Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha warned about counterfeit banknotes of 1,000 baht, which flooded the market. Recommendations on how to detect counterfeit banknotes were also announced at the government level.
According to the press secretary of the Prime Minister Tanakorn Wangbunkongchana, there are three ways to spot counterfeit banknotes, or rather to distinguish the real ones:
- Pay attention to the texture Banknote paper is normally made of cotton polymer fiber, it is different from other types of paper, and in general banknotes look stronger.
- You need to find a hidden watermark – which is a portrait of the Thai king. The watermark will be visible if you raise it to bright light.
- Try tilting or turning the banknote up and down. If the color and pattern change in the light, the banknote is genuine
In a separate paragraph, the Prime Minister of Thailand warned of large fines for both creators and users of counterfeit banknotes. “Manufacturers of counterfeit banknotes can be sentenced to life imprisonment and fines of up to 400,000 baht. But anyone who knowingly uses or distributes counterfeit banknotes faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to 300,000 baht, ”he said.
