The hotel sector on the Portuguese island of Madeira recorded 172,000 tourists in September, the highest figure ever reached in September.
According to the English-language Portuguese publication Portugal News, they provided 960,000 overnight stays to local accommodation facilities. This is less than it was in July and August when the numbers exceeded one million, but in the first autumn month, there was no such tourist flow in the history of the island.
Interestingly, it is not only the number of foreign tourists that is growing in Madeira. In September, the number of overnight stays by locals increased by 16.1 percent compared to the same month in 2021, with 205,900 Portuguese from the mainland visiting Madeira during that month.
As for foreigners, about 754,400 visited Madeira in September.
Tourists spent more days in Madeira and the Azores this June than before the pandemic in 2019, according to the National Institute of Statistics.
