India evacuates 74,000 people as cyclone approaches

Almost 74,000 people have been evacuated from coastal areas in the Indian state of Gujarat to temporary accommodation camps due to the approach of Cyclone Biparjoy. Also evacuated more than 51,000 heads of cattle – buffaloes and cows.

Local rescuers send messages to residents of coastal areas with instructions on what measures should be taken to preserve property and where temporary accommodation camps are located.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the cyclone will come to the state of Gujarat today before 20:00.

In coastal areas, units of various emergency services in India are deployed. Fishermen are not allowed to go to sea. Dozens of trains have been canceled. The two most important local Hindu temples – Dwarkadhish and Somnath – were closed to believers.

Cyclone Biparjoy (Bengali for “calamity”) formed over the Arabian Sea, the first powerful cyclone in the region this year. It is moving towards the coast of Western India and southeast of Pakistan.
