The “hot” souvenir, worth more than half a million dollars or 15.8 million hryvnias, was bought at the Istanbul airport by a Chinese “luxury” tourist in a local duty-free restaurant. A souvenir was a bottle of Japanese whiskey – of course, not just whiskey, but the oldest in history.
This is the whiskey whiskey Suntory The Yamazaki, a limited drink of Japanese origin 55 years old. Of all these bottles, the oldest single malt whiskey in the history of the House of Suntory, which was made in the 1960s under the direction of Suntory founder Shinjiro Tori, only 200 have been on sale in recent years. In 2020, 100 bottles of whiskey were sold in Japan for insane amounts through the national lottery. The following year, Suntory expanded its sales of rare whiskey by offering another 100 bottles, one of which was auctioned off and went to Istanbul.
Here, a valuable souvenir was also put up for auction: the bottle was displayed in a shop window, and the store invited interested parties to apply. In total, eight “big bucks” were interested in the exclusive product. The offer from the Chinese tourist in the amount of 559,200 dollars won.
Whether he purposefully went for the bottle or parted with such a sum for a “hot souvenir” because he could afford it – history is silent. However, this is not crazy money that collectors paid for this exclusive: in 2020, a similar bottle of whiskey was sold at auction for 795,000 dollars (about 22.5 million hryvnias).
