Massimo Coppola, the mayor of the Italian resort town of Sorrento in the southern region of Campania, signed a decree that prohibits appearing on the streets of the city with bare breasts or swimsuits, reports Il Giornale d’Italia.
This measure applies to both women and men.
The decree aims to prevent “abuses and behaviors that are perceived by the majority of people as contrary to reason and decency.”
“We found that the continuation of such situations not only creates discomfort for the local population and tourists but is also an objective indicator of a negative perception of the quality of life in our municipality, which has corresponding consequences for the image and attractiveness of the city among tourists,” said Coppola.
Residents of Sorrento who refuse to comply with the decree face a fine of 25 to 500 euros. Police officers will monitor the implementation of this order.
In the municipality of Campania, the discussion of the rule introduced in Sorrento has already begun.
