Hungary is one of the countries that immediately opens its borders to foreign tourists in very calm conditions. According to the new rules, travelers will not need to take a PCR test and will only be allowed to enter by land.
From September 2020, there is a ban on entry to Hungary for foreign tourists. Nearly three quarters of a year later, Hungary would like to gradually stimulate tourism in the country and therefore reopen it to travelers with an immediate effect.
The relaxation of restrictions is justified by the ongoing vaccination campaign in Hungary. According to official information, about 55.5% of the population are now vaccinated against Covid-19 for the first time, and 46.6% are already fully vaccinated.
No more controls
Hungary lifted the travel ban for travelers from all Schengen countries. This also means that there are now no border controls with neighboring countries, including Austria, Slovakia and Slovenia.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban also confirmed that entry by land is now possible again, after a long time, without any conditions or restrictions. However, this facilitation of entry for foreign tourists only applies to land routes. Traveling by air to Hungary for tourist purposes is still prohibited.
Travelers who decide to spend the summer in Hungary should take into account that overnight stays in hotels are still prohibited. This means that you either need to visit relatives and friends or find accommodation through some online platforms such as Airbnb.
Leisure activities are limited
For entertainment such as cinemas, museums or indoor pools, stricter rules still apply.
To enter, visitors need a Hungarian vaccination certificate, which is also required to enter the interior of restaurants and cafes. On the contrary, outdoor areas are more suitable for tourists, since a vaccination certificate is not required.
Due to the ongoing European Football Championship, there are special restrictions on visitors to the game. Spectators must present a negative PCR result no older than 72 hours. In addition, football fans are also entitled to stay in a hotel in Hungary and use the catering services.
