Greek tourism offered Germany a solution to the gas problem this winter

A proposal for Germans stressed by the prospect of a shortage of natural gas to heat their homes Greece’s tourism authority has announced this winter. German pensioners were invited to spend autumn and winter in a “mild Mediterranean winter”. The invitation, which was announced by the Greek Minister of Tourism of Greece, Vasilis Kikilias, was published by Bild newspaper. However, as they say, there are nuances.

In Germany, many are stressed by skyrocketing gas prices brought on by sanctions against Russia and are dreading the coming winter. The head of Germany’s Federal Network Agency warned consumers on Thursday that their monthly bills could triple next year.

And while Europe’s first economy struggles to fill gas storage, Greek hoteliers hope to fill hotels and wallets at the expense of Germans fleeing the cold. “In autumn and winter, it would be a great pleasure for us Greeks to welcome German retirees who want to experience the ‘Mediterranean winter’ with Greek hospitality, mild weather, and high-quality services,” said the Greek tourism minister.

The mayor of the city of Chania on the island of Crete also announced an invitation to German tourists, optimistically stating that “there is no need for heating in the house” in Greece. “We invite every German who wants to come to us this winter to live here – far from the crisis. Chania is an ideal place to survive the crisis winter: warm, friendly people and perhaps the best climate in the whole of Europe,” said the city’s mayor, Panagiotis Simandirakis.

However, it should be added that there were some less optimistic comments on the news, which specifies that in winter in Crete it can be +10 degrees and below with stormy winds. Central heating is not provided.
