The head of the Greek Ministry of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias, suggested that German citizens spend the winter in Greek resorts, where “heating is not required.” This was reported by Bild on Thursday.
The appeal of the official, first of all, is directed to German pensioners who are afraid of high utility bills. He noted that warm autumn, a mild Mediterranean winter, and low prices for hotels and meals during the low tourist season can be quite an attractive option for many German citizens.
“In autumn and winter, we would be very happy to welcome guests from Germany with all Greek hospitality, mild weather, and a high level of service,” added Vassilis Kikilias. At the same time, the heads of the regions of Greece supported the proposal of the Minister of Tourism by an absolute majority.
In turn, the Association of German Travel Agents VUSR also encourages the local population, if possible, to go to the southern countries for the winter. Back in May, representatives of the organization suggested that in the long term, the government of the country could subsidize the vacation of its citizens in warm regions for about 500 euros per person to help residents save on gas bills.
However, some German officials say that such an approach would adversely affect the German economy itself.
