The scandalous “letter in a bottle” found on Pwllheli beach in North Wales “leaked” on the Internet and spread in the local media. In the letter, tourists, in particular, Englishmen, are urged in a low-censored form to go home, calling them “fat freaks.” Locals believe the message was written by a teenager, but admit that British tourists in Wales do have problems.
The letter in the bottle was found by a resident walking his dog. The following is stated in it – in a censored translation: “Hello, stranger! If you’re here on holiday then go home, that’s the best, we don’t want you here, the English are fucking fat bastards!’ The letter also addressed a resident, in case he finds the bottle, calling him a not very comforting and censorious name, but saying only “hello, sexy.” “And if you are a fish, then hello, fish,” the message concludes.
In the mass media, where the letter got through the network, locals assure that the text was written by a child or a teenager. However, his post has sparked a flurry of comments from British tourists – who confirm that they are indeed not very welcome in Wales.
Tourism to Wales is on the rise, with trips to Wales by other Britons increasing by almost 7% in 2019. Then, the pandemic and travel bans increased this domestic tourism even more. However, not everyone is satisfied with this: as tourists comment, in Pwillhel – the same town where the incriminating note was first found – the Welsh are “very hostile to the English”. “We are currently in Pwllheli on a campsite, stayed two days out of seven and the campsite is fine, the owners are nice. But these are residents in shops and restaurants. They are very hostile to the English. I’ve been traveling in Wales for 20 years and I’ve never come across this before,” one tourist complained.
