Egypt’s tourism revenues are back to pre-pandemic levels

Deputy Tourism and Antiquities Minister Ghada Shalabi said Egypt’s tourism revenue will exceed $13 billion in 2021, returning to pre-pandemic levels, Reuters reported.

Tourism revenue was about $4 billion in 2020, down 70% from $13.03 billion in 2019, amid the coronavirus pandemic that has hit the sector hard.

The Deputy Minister expects the current year to exceed 2021 revenues thanks to a strong national strategy that includes gigantic government-led projects aimed at growing the tourism sector.

“In 2022, we will see the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Great Transformation Project in Sinai, the Galala resort on the Red Sea, and the expansion of hotels in Alamein, resulting in new tourism products that increase Egypt’s tourism competitiveness,” she said.

It should be noted that tourism provides up to 15% of Egypt’s economic production and is the main source of foreign exchange.
