Egypt has officially entered a new era of modern mobility with the presentation of its first high-speed train. The launch marks a transformative moment for both the country’s infrastructure and the millions of tourists who visit each year.
Siemens Mobility unveiled the high-speed Velaro train at the TransMEA 2025 exhibition in Cairo, showcasing Egypt’s ambitions to build one of the largest high-speed railway networks in the world. At the same time, the regional Desiro High-Capacity (HC) train successfully completed its first test run near Cairo. It will soon connect the capital with Alexandria and Ain Sokhna.
The government sees both launches as strategic milestones in Egypt’s plan to modernize transportation and boost economic development. According to Siemens, the future high-speed network will cover up to 90% of the country’s population.
Velaro: the cornerstone of Egypt’s high-speed future
The Velaro can carry 489 passengers and reach speeds of 250 km/h. Designed specifically for Egypt’s hot, sandy climate, it is part of a massive 2000-km high-speed railway system consisting of three main lines connecting all major cities. Once completed, it will be the sixth-largest high-speed network worldwide.
Desiro HC: the “Suez Canal on rails”
During the same event, the Desiro HC train performed its first test run from the new “6th of October” depot. The 660-km route, known as the Green Line, will link Cairo with Alexandria and Ain Sokhna. Its strategic importance has already earned it the nickname “the Suez Canal on rails.”
Siemens will also provide 15 years of maintenance for 41 Velaro trains, 94 Desiro HC units and 41 Vectron locomotives.
Government and industry reactions
Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir emphasized the significance of the launch:
“This marks a major step in Egypt’s transportation modernization. High-speed rail will change how people travel, reduce travel time and greatly enhance connectivity.”
Siemens CEO Roland Busch added:
“We are witnessing the future of mobility in Egypt. The Velaro premiere and the first Desiro test run symbolize progress and strong partnership.”
Why tourists should care: DIP’s analysis
The new high-speed network will dramatically improve travel experiences in Egypt.
1. Faster travel between key destinations
A journey from Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh to Cairo, which currently takes 6–8 hours by bus, could be reduced to 2–3 hours by train.
2. Increased safety
High-speed rail offers a far safer alternative to long-distance bus travel, which often involves road accident risks.
3. Higher comfort levels
Passengers enjoy spacious seating, restrooms, air-conditioning and scenic desert views — a major upgrade from bus travel.
4. More opportunities for combined trips
Tourists will be able to easily combine beach vacations with historical sightseeing:
- Cairo — Pyramids of Giza
- Luxor — Valley of the Kings
- Abu Simbel — Temples of Ramses II
5. Stronger tourism competitiveness
Modern transport infrastructure makes Egypt a more attractive destination for long-haul and regional travelers.
High-speed rail could redefine Egypt as one of the most convenient and traveler-friendly countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
